Louis Maidment
PublishedSummary
A 28-year-old man who failed to show a "scintilla of remorse" has been jailed for nine years for the historical rape and sexual abuse of two young boys.
Louis Maidment, of Hinde House Lane, Firth Park, was convicted of four counts of rape of a child under 13 and one count of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
The offenses were committed when Maidment was 15 and 16 years old. His victims, two boys who did not know each other, were aged 10 and 11 at the time of the abuse.
The court heard that police began investigating Maidment after one of the victims spotted him by chance in Sheffield in 2019 and decided to report the historical abuse. An earlier police report regarding the second victim had initially resulted in no further action but was reviewed and reactivated following the first victim's report.
In victim personal statements read to the court, both men described the devastating, long-term impact of the abuse. One victim detailed using substances to cope with the trauma, while the other explained how he still struggles to trust others and developed a mechanism of "disassociating" out of his body during the assaults.
Defending, Katherine Robinson noted that Maidment's life had changed significantly since his youth, stating he was now in a stable relationship with young children and suffered from health problems, including ADHD.
She requested that Maidment be sentenced based on legal guidelines requiring an adult to be penalized according to juvenile sentencing frameworks if the offenses occurred when they were under 18.
Judge Graham Robinson sentenced Maidment on that juvenile basis, handing down a nine-year prison sentence. Maidment must serve at least two-thirds of his term in custody and has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
