During a forensic search of the address, a bottle of juice was found on the arm of the sofa in the living room, which was recovered and examined for forensic evidence. Fingerprints were lifted from the side of the bottle and were subsequently identified as belonging to Kasim. Further fingerprint analysis was conducted on the rear door frame of the property. Several prints were obtained, and some of these were also matched to Kasim, further placing him at the scene. Following a two-week trial in July, Kasim, of Perrysfield Road, Cheshunt, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, was unanimously found guilty of murder by a jury at Luton Crown Court. He was sentenced to a life in prison on Tuesday (14 October) and will have to serve a minimum of 20 years before he can be considered for parole. Detective Inspector Caeva Taylor from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Martin’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. By all accounts Martin was as a good man, who was well liked and known for his volunteer work and as a foster carer within the local community. “This was a senseless and brutal attack that cost an innocent man his life. Kasim showed no remorse - fleeing the scene and leaving Martin fatally wounded. “Thanks to the tireless work of our investigation team, and the forensic evidence recovered, we were able to bring Kasim to justice. I hope today’s result brings some measure of closure to Martin’s family and loved ones.”

Barry Tatum
A 78-year-old man from Luton has been sentenced after sexually assaulting and abusing multiple women and girls over a period of 30 years. Barry Tatum, of Regis Road, came to the attention of Bedfordshire Police in August 2017 after one of the victims reported that she had been sexually abused by him. Following this disclosure, an investigation was launched by the Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team, and Tatum was arrested. As the investigation progressed, seven further victims of varying ages came forward, reporting abuse dating back to the late 1980s. Tatum was subsequently charged with 23 offences and following a five-week trial at Luton Crown Court in August, he was found guilty of 16 offences: five counts of indecent assault, six counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, and two counts of making indecent images of a child. Today (Thursday) he was jailed for 10 years with an additional three years on licence. He was also handed a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order after the judge described his actions as a campaign of abuse that he had shown no remorse for. Detective Constable Matt McCarthy from the PVP team said: “For three decades Tatum groomed and abused the trust of many innocent women and girls, acting in a persistently predatory manner and subjecting them to wholly inappropriate sexual abuse. “This verdict is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the victims who came forward and shared their experiences. “Their courage has ensured that a dangerous offender has now been brought to justice. We hope this outcome brings some measure of closure and reassurance to them and to the wider community. “We work hard to tackle all forms of sexual abuse. Please remember it’s never too late to speak out. Our specialist teams carry out many investigations like this one and have successfully brought many perpetrators to justice, whilst ensuring the victim has the support they need. “When you are ready, our officers are there to listen and your voice will be heard.” Lawyer Paul Robson from the Crown Prosecution Service said: “The strong testimonies of the victims were central to our case and to securing Tatum’s conviction. “Not only did these women come forward to report him, but they also showed great courage by giving their accounts in court, despite everything they had been through. As a result, Tatum will now serve time in prison for his crimes. “We would like to thank the victims for their support through this process. We also recognise the outstanding work of the police, barristers, and other professionals who ensured justice was served.”

Kennedy Jimmy
A man who raped a teenage girl 20 years ago has been jailed after DNA evidence emerged. The attack happened in October 2006, when Kennedy Jimmy, then 25, met the victim and her friend in a supermarket car park in Shefford, Bedfordshire. He raped the girl when her friend went into a shop, but it was only due to a DNA breakthrough that Kennedy, now living in Staffordshire, was caught and convicted, Bedfordshire Police said. Kennedy was jailed for six years at Luton Crown Court on Friday. Police said when the victim's friend left to go shopping, he pulled the girl into the back of a car and raped her. Despite an extensive investigation at the time, Jimmy – known to the victim only as 'Kenny' – could not be identified. A specialist review of historical rape and sexual assault cases by the major crime unit revealed a DNA match, which led to his arrest in November 2022. Jimmy, now 44, of Wessex Court, Sunny Bank, Stoke-on-Trent, was convicted of rape after a five-day trial at Luton Crown Court in October and was sentenced on Friday to six years with a life-long restraining order. Det Con Rhian Batterham-Jones said: "This conviction demonstrates that time is no barrier to justice. "Jimmy thought he had escaped accountability, but advances in forensic science and the determination of our team proved otherwise. "I want to commend the victim for her incredible courage in coming forward and reliving such a traumatic experience two decades later."

Zakaria Mohammed
Zakaria Mohammed, 32, sexually assaulted and violently attacked a young man on a train in Reading, Berkshire. A violent sex offender who launched a “sickening” attack on a young man on a train has been jailed following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation. Zakaria Mohammed, aged 32, of The Coppice, West Drayton, pleaded guilty to Actual Bodily Harm, Sexual Assault, False Imprisonment and breaching the conditions of a previous Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). He was jailed for one year and eight months at Reading Crown Court on 19 May and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years. He was also made the subject of a 10-year SHPO and must pay a victim surcharge of £187. The court heard how, shortly before 8.30am on Saturday 24 March, Mohammed sat directly opposite the 21-year-old victim at a table in an otherwise empty carriage. The pair made small talk until Mohammed, who had clearly been drinking and was carrying a half empty bottle of wine, sexually assaulted the man. He eventually moved to sit next to the victim, who attempted to the leave his seat when the train reached Reading station. When he asked Mohamed to move so he could leave he refused, leaving the victim with no other option than to crawl under the table to escape. However, as he was doing so, Mohammed repeatedly hit him over the head with his wine bottle. On leaving the train the victim reported what had happened and realised he was bleeding heavily from cuts to his head. Mohammed was arrested by BTP officers as he approached the barriers to leave the station and was found to be in breach of a previous SHPO forbidding him from travelling on public transport without paying for a ticket. BTP Detective Constable Lauren Pace said: “This was a truly sickening assault on a young man who was understandably terrified. “Mohammed is a dangerous individual who saw nothing wrong with forcing himself upon the victim. “Quite rightly he has been jailed as a result of our investigation and issued with a SHPO which will hopefully prevent him from attacking anyone else. “We urge anyone who experiences or witnesses sexual offending on the railway to report it to us by texting 61016.”

Salman Yousaf
Salman Yousaf, 46, was jailed for over four years for sexually assaulting women on London Underground trains between 2017 and 2021. A “calculated” sex offender who prowled night Tubes targeting women has been jailed for more than four years following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation. Salman Yousaf, 46, and of HMP Pentonville, pleaded guilty to nine charges in total – eight counts of Sexual Assault and one of Outraging Public Decency. At Inner London Crown Court on 20 May a judge sentenced him to four-and-a-half years imprisonment, with a further four years to be served on licence when he’s released. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Yousaf was already serving a seven-year jail term when, in 2024, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) informed BTP detectives of his offending modus operandi. This information was compared against ongoing investigations into sexual offending on the London Underground network in which the offence matched the MPS case and a suspect had not been identified. Extensive enquiries resulted in Yousaf being linked to a total of nine offences committed between 2017 and 2021. All occurred on board Tube trains at night. The first took place at around 5am on 11 March 2017 when he masturbated in front a woman on a Central Line service near Stratford. Then on eight separate occasions, all on Central Line and Jubilee Line services, Yousaf singled out women and sexually assaulted them. He made a conscious effort to target women who had fallen asleep on night Tubes. Detectives arrested Yousaf in prison on 16 April 2024, and he offered no comment to all questions put to him. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised nine charges against him in total. Then, as his trial approached, he changed his plea from not guilty and admitted to all the offences. BTP Detective Constable Iryna Cuthbert said: “Salman Yousaf is a calculated predator who deliberately exploited the night-time rail network to target lone women, using their isolation to commit a series of premeditated crimes. “Even when confronted, he showed a complete lack of remorse – the same absence of remorse he demonstrated at his sentencing. “Thanks to the information provided by our colleagues at the MPS, we were able to link him to a catalogue of vile sexual offending and ultimately extend his stay behind bars beyond 2030. “Yousaf’s crimes will have a lasting impact on the women he targeted. I want to acknowledge their bravery in coming forward and reporting what happened, and I hope his sentence brings them some measure of justice. “Tackling sexual offending on the railway is a top priority for BTP and we encourage anyone who is victim of, or witness to, this crime type to report it to us using our 61016 text service.

The court heard that Wyer was arrested in June 2022 after child protection services launched an investigation and his mother invited officers into their home. Wyer, who had only just turned 17 at the time of his arrest, had 461 still and moving sexual images of children on his mobile phone and laptop. William Grassby
An "incredibly depraved" 49-year-old man who tried to arrange meetings with children for sex has been jailed for two years after being caught in two separate sting operations. William Grassby was handed the custodial sentence at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and one count of attempting to meet a boy under the age of 16 following grooming. The court heard that Grassby was first targeted by an online decoy group, who posed as a 14-year-old boy. Grassby conversed with the group for a week before driving to the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, expecting to meet the child for sex. While under active police investigation for the Meadowhall incident, Grassby targeted another child online—unwittingly communicating with an undercover police officer posing as a 12-year-old boy. He sent numerous sexual messages and actively tried to arrange an off-camera meeting with the officer. A subsequent search of Grassby's electronic devices uncovered extensive sexual communication with individuals suspected to be children. Recorder Ian Mullarkey noted that Grassby had previously completed a sex offenders' treatment program as part of a prior sentence, yet went on to commit further offenses while under investigation. The judge stated he had "no confidence" that Grassby had a realistic prospect of rehabilitation. Investigating officer Sarah Anderson condemned Grassby's actions, emphasizing that he was fully aware of the victims' purported ages and deliberately arranged meetings in areas out of view of CCTV cameras. In addition to the two-year prison term, Grassby was issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for a decade.

Louis Maidment
A 28-year-old man who failed to show a "scintilla of remorse" has been jailed for nine years for the historical rape and sexual abuse of two young boys. Louis Maidment, of Hinde House Lane, Firth Park, was convicted of four counts of rape of a child under 13 and one count of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. The offenses were committed when Maidment was 15 and 16 years old. His victims, two boys who did not know each other, were aged 10 and 11 at the time of the abuse. The court heard that police began investigating Maidment after one of the victims spotted him by chance in Sheffield in 2019 and decided to report the historical abuse. An earlier police report regarding the second victim had initially resulted in no further action but was reviewed and reactivated following the first victim's report. In victim personal statements read to the court, both men described the devastating, long-term impact of the abuse. One victim detailed using substances to cope with the trauma, while the other explained how he still struggles to trust others and developed a mechanism of "disassociating" out of his body during the assaults. Defending, Katherine Robinson noted that Maidment's life had changed significantly since his youth, stating he was now in a stable relationship with young children and suffered from health problems, including ADHD. She requested that Maidment be sentenced based on legal guidelines requiring an adult to be penalized according to juvenile sentencing frameworks if the offenses occurred when they were under 18. Judge Graham Robinson sentenced Maidment on that juvenile basis, handing down a nine-year prison sentence. Maidment must serve at least two-thirds of his term in custody and has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Edem Sutton
A 33-year-old Sheffield man has been jailed for six years and six months after being found guilty of sexually abusing a boy while he slept. Edem Sutton, of Lupton Road, was convicted of two counts of sexual activity with a child following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. The court heard that Sutton spent months grooming the victim by buying him gifts, taking him on bike rides, and interacting with him on social media. In October 2019, he manipulated the boy into staying at his home, where he assaulted him after the boy fell asleep while watching a film. Following the attack, Sutton sent messages to the victim, warning him to stay silent about what had happened. Sutton maintained his innocence throughout the trial, but a jury rejected his defense. He was sentenced on April 25, 2023, to six and a half years in prison and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 15 years. Investigating Officer Detective Lindsey Fishwick praised the victim’s bravery throughout the case. "Sutton maintained his innocence throughout the trial and I am pleased that the jury saw through his lies," Det Fishwick said. "I hope the sentence handed out to Sutton today will help the victim as he moves forward with his life."

Roger Allen
A 60-year-old Sheffield man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a series of horrific child sex offenses. Roger Allen, formerly of Abbey Brook Gardens, admitted to 16 counts at Sheffield Crown Court, including numerous counts of rape, child pornography, and possessing an extreme pornographic image. The court heard that Allen’s victim came forward after enduring years of severe sexual abuse. Following the report, South Yorkshire Police searched Allen’s property, uncovering indecent images and videos of children that he had produced himself. Investigating officer Detective Constable Jason Earl praised the victim's bravery, noting that the long-term abuse would have likely continued had they not come forward. "It cannot be underestimated the significant toll that child sexual abuse has on victims—it irreparably changes a child's life," DC Earl said. "Allen took full advantage for his own disgraceful sexual criminality." DC Earl added that Allen had shown "little to no remorse or acknowledgment for the pain and suffering he has caused." In addition to his 20-year custodial sentence, Allen has been placed permanently on the Sex Offenders Register.

Geoffrey Hurt
A 38-year-old man has been jailed for 18 months after biting a 13-year-old girl in intimate areas and sending her highly inappropriate sexual messages. Geoffrey Hurt, of Batemoor Place, Batemoor, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after a jury rejected his claims that the physical contact was merely a "play fight." Jurors found Hurt guilty of two counts of an offender aged 18 or over engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a child, and one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child. He was acquitted of separate allegations relating to a second complainant. The court heard that following the physical assault, Hurt sent messages to the young victim soliciting photos and asking if she would ever "go with an older man." During sentencing, Judge David Dixon told Hurt that his communications were "beyond flirtatious" and amounted to an implicit invitation to engage in sexual activity. "A man who is interested in biting young girls in a sexual way, as the jury found you had, is clearly a worry," Judge Dixon said. "You had a sexual interest in her, that's what this has all been about." The prosecution also presented evidence that Hurt had searched online for material depicting sexual activity involving children, a finding the judge said proved Hurt's underlying interests. Defense barrister Camille Morland argued that Hurt, a former soldier with a "complex background," had crossed boundaries but would benefit more from community-based rehabilitation. She noted that Hurt was currently in a relationship with a woman in Hampshire and had intended to relocate there. However, Judge Dixon ruled out a suspended sentence, citing Hurt's "continued denials" and "lies to the jury" as evidence that he showed no realistic prospect of rehabilitation. The judge also noted that Hurt had a prior conviction for sexual assault against an adult female dating back 12 years. In addition to the 18-month prison term, Hurt was handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which strictly prohibits him from contacting anyone under the age of 18. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and made subject to a 10-year restraining order to protect the victim.

Judge Rachael Harrison said the attack was "every woman's worst nightmare". Tijani, of Cherry Street in Sheffield, was sentenced on Thursday and given a lifetime restraining order to prevent him contacting the victim. Following an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, jurors heard that Preston suffered months of abuse after being placed with the couple in April 2023. The child sustained numerous injuries and was subjected to sexual abuse before his death in July 2023. While Varley was convicted of murder and multiple child abuse offences, McGowan-Fazakerley was found guilty of failing to protect Preston and participating in some of the abuse. The court heard that despite opportunities to intervene, he allowed the mistreatment to continue. Detectives described the case as one of the most disturbing they had encountered. Both men are due to be sentenced on Thursday.

Jamie Varley
Teacher Guilty of Murdering Adopted Baby Son A teacher has been found guilty of murdering his adopted baby son following a trial that heard evidence of repeated abuse. The court was told the child suffered serious injuries while in his father's care, which medical experts concluded were non-accidental. The case has raised concerns about child safeguarding and support for vulnerable children. Sentencing will take place at a later date.

Peter Selby
A sex offender whose transgender status helped him stay out of jail after being caught with 125,000 child abuse images has been back in court. In June 2022 Peter Selby got a suspended sentence after being caught with a vile online catalogue of pictures and movies featuring children as young as three. A judge told him at the time: "You are someone who identifies as transgender and the impact of custody would be significant for you in the circumstances." Probation officials agreed Selby, who had sought independent help, could be managed in the community and his 14 month jail term was suspended for two years. Selby was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register and abide by a sexual harm prevention order, which prevents him using private browsing or VPN software for ten years. Selby of Ladysmith Street, South Shields, was back at Newcastle Crown Court today after he admitted breach of the sexual harm prevention order just nine months after it was imposed. The 71-year-old, who was referred to as "he" in court, has shoulder length hair, a bust and was wearing lipstick during the hearing. Prosecutor Rachael Glover said police had gone to Selby's home to carry out a risk review in March 2023 and his internet enabled devices were inspected. Miss Glover said: "During a search of the laptop, the officer found VPN software downloaded to the device and set up with the name of the defendant along with his email address. "A further search by the officer in relation to the settings showed the VPN was activated and the defendant was arrested." The court heard no illegal activity or images were detected on the device. Judge Robert Adams told Selby: "A VPN had been downloaded, which was active and could be used to mask internet identity or IP address when accessing sites on the internet. "For obvious reasons, bearing in mind your previous convictions, that was a requirement of the SHPO, to make it difficult, if you were tempted, to re offend in the way you had before." Judge Adams said Selby also has convictions for two offences of indecent assault in 1992, for which he was jailed for four months. There was no mention of Selby's transgender identity at today's hearing but the judge told him: "You have been wearing women's clothing for the last 30 years. Your family have distanced themselves from you as a result. "You have no history of drug use and no drinking since 2013." Judge Adams said there has been no offending in the last two years and told Selby: "You would undoubtedly be at risk of physical or sexual assault in custody because of your presentation in a male prison." Selby was sentenced to 10 months suspended for 18 months with programme and rehabilitation requirements plus a £100 fine. The court heard Selby, who has expressed remorse, has health difficulties, including memory problems and claims to have no recollection of downloading the software, which the judge said he was sceptical about.

Oliver Thomas Lupton Lane
A former law student has been jailed after initiating a sexual relationship with a child over Snapchat, police have said. Oliver Thomas Lupton Lane, 24, admitted 11 charges including sexual activity with a child, arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence and several charges of making indecent photographs of children. North Yorkshire Police said Lane - of Richmond Hill, Garman Carr Lane, Wistow, Selby - was arrested after a girl, who was 14 at the time, disclosed that she had begun speaking to a man over Snapchat and they had met and engaged in sexual activity. He was sentenced to six years and 10 months at York Crown Court on Friday. Following the victim's disclosure, police said Lane was arrested and his devices seized. Those devices were found to contain child abuse material relating to the victim as well as two other children. In a statement, the force said a lengthy Snapchat conversation between the victim and Lane was recovered at the time. The contents of the chat clearly demonstrated that Lane was fully aware of the child's age, and yet he went on to groom her, cause her to make explicit photographs and video, and to meet her for sex, acccording to police. Lane was in his third year of a law degree at the time he was identified as a suspect, and "had boasted to one of his victims that he was already a lawyer", police said. Det Con Oliver Dalby said: "The offences for which Lane has pleaded guilty are wholly reprehensible." "He has inflicted such a profound level of emotional trauma upon one of his victims, that she is unsure whether she will ever fully recover. " He added: "I would like to thank the victims in this case for their bravery, trust and patience. It would not have been possible to bring Lane to justice without their co-operation. "

Philip Young
A former Conservative councillor has admitted drugging and raping his now ex-wife. Philip Young, formerly of Swindon, pleaded guilty to a string of sexual offences against Joanne Young over a thirteen-year-period. He denied eight other charges, including making indecent and possessing prohibited images of children. Ms Young, who has waived her legal right to anonymity, was at Winchester Crown Court today, where four other men charged with sexual offences against her, pleaded not guilty.

Liron Velleman
A former Labour councillor who sent a nude video of himself to a police officer, who he believed to be a 13-year-old schoolgirl, has been spared a jail term. Liron Velleman, 31, sent messages on an online chatroom and Snapchat to the “girl”, discussing sex acts and urging her to send pictures of herself wearing a dressing gown, pyjamas, and a bra and crop top. Velleman used the alias “Tim Graham 95” to send the messages, which culminated in him stripping down to his underwear for a picture and then sending a video of his penis. However, the recipient was actually an undercover Metropolitan Police officer posing as a teenager. Velleman, who was previously a member of the Jewish Labour Movement and part of anti-racism group Hope Not Hate, resigned as a Labour councillor for the ward of Whetstone in Barnet, north London, after his arrest for child sexual offences. At Southwark Crown Court on Friday, he was handed an eight-month prison sentence, which Judge James Lofthouse agreed to suspend for the next 15 months. “You know you have no one to blame for the disintegration of your personal and professional life but yourself,” said the judge. “This is where your reckless, vile and frankly devious interest in children has led you. This could have been a real child.” The court heard Velleman’s wife has left him, and he is only allowed limited supervised contact with his young son. The judge urged Velleman to consider how he would feel if his own child fell victim to an online predatory paedophile, and added that, while he engaged with treatment services immediately after his arrest, Velleman is “still in denial to a degree”. “You maintain you have no sexual interest in children, but that does not accord with the persistent exchanges with someone you believed was 13-years-old.” Labour stayed silent on the reason for Velleman’s resignation of his Barnet Council seat in early 2025, and the party went on to win the by-election to find his replacement. Velleman pleaded guilty in February this year after being charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to look at an image of sexual activity. Prosecutor Edmund Blackman said the undercover officer, using the name Kaylee, was approached by Velleman on the messaging service Chatib at the start of December 2024. “He was told from the off that she was 13, and he maintained an interest in her”, he said. “The chat moved to Snapchat – she was talking about her interests in horse riding and shopping, and it became sexual quite quickly.” He said the undercover officer sent a picture of a girl in her bedroom to Velleman, and in his response, he asked about her “cute” knickers. Velleman sent back a picture of his naked torso, the court heard, and then asked for a picture of the girl in her bra. The messages continued over the course of several days, and when Velleman was staying in a hotel, he was sent a picture of the girl wearing a school uniform, to which he replied that she “looked cute” and asked about regulation skirt lengths. Velleman talked about masturbating before sending a picture of himself in just his boxer shorts with the comment: “They might be coming off soon”. In the messages that followed, Velleman solicited a picture of the girl in her dressing gown, sent back an image of himself in the hotel bed, and then asked her to open her dressing gown to show her pyjamas. “He asked if she wanted to see him take off his boxer shorts, and he sent a short video of an adult male erect penis, presumably himself,” said Mr Blackman. Scott Brady KC, for Velleman, said his life is “in tatters” in the wake of his arrest and charge, ending his political career and his marriage. “His life has fallen in upon him,” he said. He said Velleman went to the Stop It Now service, which helps to prevent child sexual abuse, the day after he was arrested. “Here we have a man who has, of course, caused himself this catastrophic situation, but he has immediately started to address the matter,” he said. Velleman, of North Finchley, was supported in court by his parents, as the judge ordered him to carry out 180 hours of community service and 20 rehabilitation days as part of his suspended prison sentence. He will be on the Sex Offenders Register and under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next 10 years, and must also pay £150 in costs and a £187 victim surcharge.

Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam
A man who tried to kidnap a teenage girl has been jailed for more than four years. Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam, 28, was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on Friday after admitting to the crime, which happened in March. His attempt to kidnap the 17-year-old girl was thwarted when members of the public intervened. The court heard a statement from his victim in which she said she hoped Adam was jailed as she "wouldn't feel safe" unless he was in prison. "I hope you learn how to be a good person. Most of all I hope you get locked up because I know if you were out in the world, I wouldn't feel safe and I'd worry you'd do this again to another young girl," the statement said. The court heard that on 6 March she was walking through Swindon town centre when Adam, of Stanier Street in the town, tried to engage with her multiple times, even as she tried to flag down passing vehicles. When she crossed the road at the traffic lights he ran towards her, grabbed her and dragged her back across the road. Members of the public on a bus intervened and Adam ran off before trying to talk to another woman and following her when she walked away. He also followed a female witness to the earlier kidnapping, but again the public intervened and stopped him. Adam, who pleaded guilty to attempted kidnap in October, will serve a further two years and 11 months on licence once he is released. 'Predatory behaviour' In her personal statement, the victim said she now understood why some women say they "don't feel safe to walk at night". "The world has too many people like you," her statement said to Adam. "Although you are one of many, the world gets a little safer with every person locked away" she added. Police praised the the "immense bravery and strength" of the victim and thanked the public for their intervention. Investigating officer Det Con Anna McCormack from Wiltshire Police said Adam had "displayed predatory behaviour towards a number of women". "I hope the conviction and today's sentencing of Adam shows how seriously we take these offences and that there is no place for it in Wiltshire," she added

David Chellapah
Prolific child sexual offender jailed following Met Police investigation A prolific child sexual offender has been jailed following a detailed investigation by specialist officers from the Met. David Chellapah, 31 (02.09.1994), was sentenced to 10 years at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 22 May after pleading guilty on Friday, 27 February to 21 offences relating to online sexual exploitation of children. The offences took place between August and October 2025. The investigation began after police received intelligence that Chellapah was communicating with a child and attempting to arrange a meeting in order to sexually abuse them. Acting swiftly, officers from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime Command, Online Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (OCSAE) team intercepted and arrested him on Friday, 17 October 2025 when he attended a pre-arranged meeting with a child to sexually abuse them. DC Alan Stepkowski-Fellows from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime Command said: “Chellapah showed clear and persistent predatory behaviour, targeting children online and attempting to escalate that contact into serious harm. Our officers acted quickly to intervene, prevent further offences and bring him before the courts. “Safeguarding victims remains our priority. We worked closely with partners to ensure all children were protected and supported, with specialist officers using trauma-informed approaches. We also secured strong digital evidence so victims did not have to attend court. “We will continue working with partners to protect children and hold offenders to account.” Extensive digital forensic analysis of Chellapah’s mobile phone and other devices revealed he had been targeting multiple children aged between 12 and 15 across social media platforms. He engaged in sustained grooming behaviour, sending sexual messages, inciting children to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to arrange further meetings. Officers identified multiple victims through communications recovered during the investigation, with some children subjected to coercion and pressure to produce sexual images and videos. Searches of Chellapah’s home address led to the seizure of several digital devices, including a USB stick containing a significant volume of indecent images and videos of children. Some material involved very young children. Following a thorough investigation, Chellapah pleaded guilty to all counts in February 2026. His offences included sexual communication with a child, attempting to meet a child following grooming, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and offences relating to the production and possession of indecent images of children. The Met has recorded significant year‑on‑year increases in reporting of sexual offences, suggesting more victims feel able to come forward. New statistics also show that arrests and charges for child sexual exploitation have increased by 116 per cent over the last year. The Met is committed to improving victim experiences at every stage within an investigation, recently committing to a £10 million upgrade programme of the suites used to carry out VRIs (video recorded interviews) across its estates. As one of a number of ongoing projects to improve the experiences of victims, the spaces will allow officers to record sensitive victim interviews to be replayed in court and inform an investigation.

PC Paul Davies
A former police constable who encouraged a teenage girl to send him naked images of herself has been jailed for nine months. Ex-safeguarding adviser Paul Davies, 57, groomed the 17-year-old after meeting her while on duty. He previously pleaded guilty to making indecent images of a child after taking screenshots of five photographs sent to him last year. The married father of two was jailed at Wolverhampton Crown Court. West Midlands Police described his actions as "deplorable". Judge James Burbidge QC was told Davies had exchanged images with the teenager after instigating sexualised conversation with her. Latest news and updates from the West Midlands He said: "You were a married man in service as a police officer, telling them no doubt about the problems of the internet and problems with disclosing images. "Ultimately you took the step to provide [the teenager] with your personal telephone number. In essence, you groomed her. "There is no suggestion you coerced her but it was all at your instigation. You have caused these images to be sent to you." The judge added that Davies's position as a youth officer, coupled with the grooming and the age gap between the officer and the girl, meant it would not be just to pass a non-custodial sentence. Davies had worked as a young persons' officer Simon Hunka, defending, said Davies, of Thoresby Croft, Dudley, had "lost quite literally everything" due to press coverage of the case. Mr Hunka told the court: "He has been a local police officer for that area for many, many years. "Having once been somebody who was looked up to, he now occupies a position where people find it difficult to meet his eye." West Midlands Police said Davies left the force in June, having been arrested in May. Det Con Leanne Tully, from the force's public protection unit, said: "Davies was a young persons' officer during his time with the force, which makes this all the more deplorable. "There is no place in society for this kind of behaviour and he must now serve time behind bars."

Peter Rowell
Former BBC and ITV presenter Peter Rowell has been jailed for six years for sexually abusing girls. He admitted 12 charges of indecent assault on girls under the age of 16, six charges of making indecent images and one of possessing images. Rowell, 53, had denied a charge of rape and the jury at Bristol Crown Court accepted an alternative charge of indecent assault. He assaulted his five victims between 1989 and the early 1990s. Rowell was also placed on the sex offenders register. Sentencing him, Judge David Ticehurst said the effect on his victims had been "considerable". "You had a position of trust in the media which you abused. "You were prepared to use the world of showbusiness to attract young girls." Computer seized The broadcaster, from Wickwar, South Gloucestershire, sparked a nationwide search after failing to turn up for work in March 2011. His car had been found in a supermarket car park at Yate. The father of one was found "safe and well" the next day in Keswick, Cumbria, and was later arrested by police. Before his disappearance, police had raided his home and seized his computer. On that computer detectives found more than 400 indecent images of children. Rowell presented on BBC radio, was a newsreader on ITV West and worked as a DJ for GWR Speaking outside court, Det Insp Jill Kells praised the five victims for being "really brave" and "very courageous" in coming forward to explain what happened to them. She said police were alerted when the first woman came forward just over a year ago. A second then made contact and following Rowell's arrest and charge, another three victims contacted detectives. Det Insp Kells said a lot of the initial contact with the victims had been made through the studios of the then GWR station on Bristol's waterfront after the girls had shown interest in the radio station and in Rowell. "Mr Rowell abused his position of trust and respect and took advantage," she said. "Many of the offences took place at the radio station [GWR] and at a victim's home address... but none of them were committed at the BBC or ITV studios. "He used very predatory and grooming behaviour to groom them and then offend against them. 'Starstruck' "I hope this sentence allows the victims to get some sort of comfort and closure and allow them to move forward." Sian Sullivan from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that despite the fact the offences took place some time ago, it would always prosecute if there was sufficient evidence and it was in the public interest. "Peter Rowell used his fame to exploit innocent, starstruck young girls. "Today shows this type of behaviour will not be tolerated by the justice system and offenders will be brought to justice, whoever they may be." Rowell, originally from Sunderland, presented the afternoon show on BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Somerset. He was also a newsreader on ITV West for more than 10 years and worked as a DJ for commercial radio station GWR in the 1980s.

Hassnain Shahzad
A Metropolitan Police special constable who groped a 14-year-old girl's bottom in the queue at Tesco was caught thanks to the pineapple chunks he was buying at the time. Hassnain Shahzad, 27, preyed on the schoolgirl while she was shopping with her mother at the Tesco Express in Bishopsgate in the City of London. He put his hand on her bottom inside the store, in a moment the girl first thought might have been accidental, but to her "horror" she realised it was deliberate when Shahzad groped her a second time in the street outside. The girl was hailed by a judge at Inner London crown court as "very bright and very brave" for coming forward to police and giving evidence in Shahzad's trial. She remembered her attacker had been holding a cartoon of chopped pineapple when the incident happened, helping City of London Police detectives to find him on CCTV and track him down.Shahzad joined the Met as a special constable in June 2023, and he had just complete his training when the sexual assaults happened a few months later. On Thursday, Judge David Richards handed Shahzad a six-month prison term suspended for 18 months and ordered him to complete 25 rehabilitation days with the probation service as well as 120 hours of community service.
James Wilson
A man who sent graphic sexual messages and videos to what he thought was a 14-year-old has been sentenced. James Wilson, 46, told the "girl" he would kill any "paedo" who tried to have sex with her, but then deluged her with messages saying he wanted to do just that, Newcastle Crown Court heard. The profile was run by a group of paedophile hunters and Wilson was seriously injured in an attack after they posted about his case online, the court heard. Wilson was jailed for 14 months, suspended for 21 months, after admitting attempted sexual communications with a child and attempting to make a child watch a sexual act. Wilson started messaging the decoy on WhatsApp in December 2023, prosecutor Joe Hedworth said, bombarding her with compliments. He repeatedly told her she was "gorgeous" and "stunning" and, after being told she was 14, wished she was twice her age or he was a 14-year-old boy again, the court heard. Confronted at home Among the multitude of messages were ones acknowledging he might be seen as a "perv" or "paedo" for messaging her and vowing to kill or mutilate any man who tried to have sex with her. He also said he should be shot for loving a 14-year-old girl but she was the "most beautiful girl in the world", the court heard. Wilson referred to himself as her "uncle James" and told her to delete the chat so her mother would not see it as he was "paranoid people would think he was a pervert", Mr Hedworth said. Wilson went on to detail explicit sexual acts he wanted to perform on the girl, the court heard. He sent her pictures and videos of himself having sex, the court heard. Wilson also said he wanted to meet up with her in public and pretend she was his daughter while he secretly molested her, the court heard, inviting her to meet him in Chester-le-Street. Wilson was eventually confronted at his home on 31 May last year by the paedophile hunters and was "drunk and aggressive" and threatened to kill himself, Mr Hedworth said. 'Vicious' attack In mitigation, Christopher Knox said Wilson had been "run" out of his home after the group posted details about him on social media. He said Wilson was then "viciously" beaten in a "very unpleasant and entirely unjustified" attack following an earlier court hearing which had left him "seriously injured" and needing a metal plate to be inserted around his eye. Judge Gavin Doig ordered Wilson's new address not be revealed because of the earlier attacks, adding: "He is now in a different location and I want to ensure there is no repetition of that violence." The judge said there was a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation" so the jail term could be suspended, although he added it would not have been if the child had been real. Wilson must also sign the sex offenders register and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.
