Man Jailed for Rape of Woman in Worthing Car Park
A 27‑year‑old man has been jailed for 11 years and three months after admitting the rape of a woman in a Worthing car park earlier this year.
Attack in Lyndhurst Road
Suleman Mukaish targeted a vulnerable woman on 11 March, grabbing her and taking her into a car park off Lyndhurst Road, where he raped her. The victim, who cannot be identified, managed to alert a member of the public immediately afterward. The witness later told police the woman was clearly distressed and “in a bad way.”
Arrest at Gatwick Airport
Mukaish fled the scene and, within two days, attempted to leave the country. He was arrested at London Gatwick Airport after booking a one‑way ticket abroad. He initially refused to answer police questions but later pleaded guilty when confronted with overwhelming evidence.
Evidence Secured by Detectives
Investigators pieced together CCTV footage showing Mukaish leading the victim to the car park. Forensic officers also recovered a fingerprint and handprint from a nearby vehicle, both matching Mukaish.
Police Praise Victim and Public
Detective Superintendent Andrew Harbour commended the victim’s “bravery and courage,” as well as the witnesses who came forward with crucial information. He also praised the investigative team for their “dedication and determination” in building a compelling case.
Commitment to Tackling Violence Against Women
Sussex Police said the case reflects their commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, emphasising that reports of rape are taken extremely seriously.
Support for victims of sexual violence is available through Safe:Space Sussex and the Sussex Police website.
